A tour of south east Mull from Craignure, taking in two castles, an ancient stone circle and a sandy beach.
Just south of Craignure off the A849 (from Pennygate Lodge head away from Craignure in the direction of Iona) stands Duart Castle. With its commanding position looking out over the Sound of Mull and Loch Linnhe towards mainland Argyll, the refurbished 14th Century keep is the ancient seat of Clan Maclean. The castle tour is fascinating - the great hall, state bedrooms, Maclean family photographs, military uniform collection and clan exhibition. Once you've taken in the panoramic views from the castle grounds, round off your visit in the tearoom and gift shop - opening hours and more information here.
From Duart Castle, rejoin the main road and head south (left), then after passing Loch Spelve take the turning to Lochbuie. As you approach the village look out for signs for Standing Stones Circle just before a bridge. The well preserved Bronze Age stone circle would originally have had 9 upright slabs of granite - one is missing today, replaced by a low boulder - with 3 outlying stones. This tranquil setting with Ben Buie as a backdrop is well worth the walk following the white stone markers - watch out the path can be a bit muddy.
Returning from the Stone Circle, it is a short drive into Lochbuie village where you can park at the seafront near the Old Post Office - great for lunches or tea and cake.
A walk along the seafront leads to the ruins of 15th Century Moy Castle. A 3-storey tower with garret was built by Hector MacLean, brother of Maclean of Duart and the founder of the re-named MacLaines of Lochbuie. Abandoned as a residence in 1752, the castle has commanding views of the sea loch. There are information boards to read as you wander around the ruin's perimeter.
Continue walking from Castle Moy to reach Laggan Sands, a beautiful, west facing sandy beach with stunning sea views. The Maclaines of Lochbuie Mausoleum is also reached from here.
